A new scam in the Kane and McHenry County area asks residents to fill out a jury duty questionnaire and include personal information with social security numbers.
“These types of questionnaires are not legitimate,” said Elgin Crime Prevention Specialist and Elderly Service Officer Cherie Aschenbrenner. “The personal information obtained from these questionnaires is used for identity theft purposes.”
Kane and McHenry counties do send out jury-duty questionnaires, but do not ask for personal information and social security numbers.
Aschenbrenner said that if residents receive such a questionnaire, they should contact the Elgin Police Department’s non-emergency line at (847) 289-2700. They can also contact Kane or McHenry County to ensure any questionnaire received is legitimate. Kane County can be reached at: 630/553-4217; McHenry County can be reached at 815/334-4390.
“No Elgin resident has reported being a victim yet,” said Aschenbrenner. “But residents should be vigilant.”
