The Elgin Fire Department is joining the Office of Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) to promote September as Campus Fire Safety Month, and college students in schools across the state encouraged to be aware of the need for fire safety in campus buildings.
“College students seldom consider fire safety as a priority when heading off to school,” said Elgin Fire Chief John Fahy. “But by simply being aware of exits or other ways out of a building during an emergency can make a difference.”
OSFM’s campaign seeks to inform all college students about fire safety and how to prevent serious injuries and fatalities.
“Any opportunity we can take to make people aware of fire prevention and safety is an opportunity to possibly save a life,” said Fahy.
