The city of Elgin is excited to announce the creation of its sustainability commission. This nine-person commission will consist of six community members and three from city staff. The commission will oversee the implementation of the city's recently adopted Sustainability Action Plan as well as award funds through the city’s Neighborhood Improvement Grant Program. Commissioners will meet monthly, have three-year term limits and must either be a city employee, an Elgin resident, an Elgin business owner or a full time student in Elgin.
The application is available now on the city's sustainability website www.cityofelgin.org/green.
Applications for the Sustainability Commission will be accepted until 5 p.m., Friday, September 16, 2011. Commissioners will be selected by City Council at its September 28 or October 12 meeting. Commissioners will be notified via mail following that meeting.
Those not interested in serving as a commissioner can still be involved by joining one of Elgin's nine sustainability working groups at www.cityofelgin.org under the Living in Elgin – Community Involvement tab. These working groups wrote the plan and will assist city staff and the commission to carry out its recommendations.
