[ARCHIVED] ESO and Feeding Greater Elgin join forces; Aug. 13 concert to benefit the hungry

A beloved summer tradition returns on Saturday, August 13, when the Elgin Symphony Orchestra once again performs in a free concert at Larkin High School Auditorium, 1475 Larkin Ave. to benefit Feeding Greater Elgin (FGE). ESO associate conductor Stephen Squires leads the orchestra in a selection of time-tested classics and pops favorites. There will be reserved seating for sponsors. For the general public, seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. No food or drink is allowed in the Auditorium. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

FGE is a new collaborative non-profit organization formed to address critical hunger in the greater Elgin community. Among the organization’s goals in 2011 is to have a permanent facility for food acquisition and distribution that will serve thousands of people each month. To impact hunger now, FGE hosts mobile food pantry distributions in Elgin.

The concert itself is free; however, FGE encourages everyone to donate generously to help hungry neighbors in need. Heritage-Crystal Clean, Inc. is the event’s primary sponsor.

"Over 11,000 people live in poverty in Elgin and South Elgin. Access to nutritious food has become a daily challenge for many of these people," explains Susan Ericson, FGE executive director. "Through innovative partnerships, FGE has already provided more than 72,000 pounds of food to hundreds of families in Elgin. With generous support from the community, we will expand our efforts!

Dale Lonis, ESO’s chief executive officer added, “It is a pleasure to bring back a concert that so many people have enjoyed over the years and for such a good cause.”

No tickets or reservations are required for the concert. For additional information call Feeding Greater Elgin at 630-768-8044 or the Elgin Symphony Orchestra at 847-888-4000.
