A westbound Canadian Pacific train derailed in Elgin just before Raymond Street on Sunday, Jan. 16, causing police to close roads and detour motorists around the wreckage.
Emergency communications received two calls just before 2 p.m. reporting the derailment. Upon arrival, police found eight cars off the track and in a nearby ditch.
While the train was reportedly carrying hazardous materials, the derailed cars were not. Elgin fire officials are on the scene continually assessing the hazmat situation and assisting railroad adminstration with area control. There were no injuries.
Canadian Pacific officials are currently on the scene investigating. Metra officials are overseeing the cleanup. Those using Metra are encouraged to call ahead to determine transportation options.
Elgin police have closed Raymond St. between Bluff City Blvd. and Kenyon Rd. and Saint Charles St. from Elgin Ave. to Kenyon Rd.
