The City of Elgin senior rebate checks for those homeowners residing in Cook County will be distributed later than usual this year. Senior citizens in Cook County can expect to have their checks by the end of January 2011. The Senior Citizen Rebate Program has been in place since 1997. The rebate program was implemented to provide some tax relief to senior residents and is funded with the revenue Elgin receives from the Grand Victoria riverboat casino.
Typically, rebate checks for those homeowners who reside in Cook County are mailed out prior to year end. The delay in the County’s issuance of tax bills and inability to provide the City with a list of senior exempted properties has caused this postponement.
“We are disappointed that our seniors will not be receiving their senior rebate check by year end,” commented Colleen Lavery, Chief Financial Officer. “Upon receipt of the needed information from Cook County, staff will process the data enabling checks to be prepared and mailed as quickly as possible. We appreciate the patience and understanding of our residents.”
