An Elgin resident contacted police today after receiving a telephone call from an automated system asking the resident to call a special number to renew a credit card.
“It’s just another phishing scam,” said Elgin Crime Prevention Specialist and Elderly Service Officer Cherie Aschenbrenner. “These types of scams never seem to end.”
Aschenbrenner said people should never give out personal banking information over the phone to anyone calling for the information.
“Residents should simply hang up,” said Aschenbrenner. “If there are any questions for their bank, residents should look up the number themselves and dial the bank directly. Never call a number someone asks them to call.”
