The holiday season is fast approaching, including the season when homeowners will be putting out lights and decorations on their porches and lawns. To help residents get started, ComEd representatives will be hosting a LED holiday light trade-in event during the Halloween Family Fun Fair being held at The Centre this Saturday, October 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The first 50 families who bring in an old strand of lights to be recycled will receive a free strand of new LED Christmas (limit 2). For those who miss out on the free lights, information will be available on buying them at a discount on the ComEd Online Store. In addition, extra strands can be turned in to ComEd that day for recycling. Approximately 75% of each strand of old lights can be recycled and not go into our landfills.
The City of Elgin is currently participating in the ComEd Energy Challenge, a competition among eleven Chicago area communities to win $100,000 that the community can use toward energy saving initiatives. ENERGY STAR pledges taken by any Elgin resident will count toward helping the City of Elgin win this competition. Elgin residents can take the ENERGY STAR pledge each time they purchase any ENERGY STAR product, from light bulbs to computers and appliances.
