Wing Street reopened up to Illinois Rt. 31 Friday afternoon as contractors work to complete a $1.4 million improvement project that had the intersection closed since mid-July.
“Pavement striping is done,” said Elgin City Engineer Joe Evers. “We’re still expecting signal work to be completed next week, but temporary signals are controlling traffic.”
The project was largely funded through The Surface Transportation Program, a federal highway grant program, that works to provide funding for state highways and local street projects.
The grant provides for the widening of the intersection to accommodate a left-hand turn lane along with new traffic signals and a new railroad crossing. The construction work is expected to last through November.
