[ARCHIVED] Kimball Street Bridge To Remain Closed Until Saturday

The Kimball Street Bridge currently is open to west bound traffic during rush hour this evening, however, the bridge will not reopen officially until around noon Saturday.

Elgin Public Works crews are working to repair a water main break that happened at the intersection of Rt. 31 and Kimball Street Wednesday evening.

"There were several holes in about 10 feet of pipe that crews are repairing," said Public Works Director John Loete. "We expect to have all traffic moving over the bridge again by Saturday."

The bridge's westbound lanes will again be open to rush hour traffic on Friday morning.

The Kimball Street bridge was closed snarling rush hour traffic on Wednesday. The Metra line was initially closed north of Chicago Street and Metra bused passengers from Chicago Street to Big Timber. Full service was restored and there are no reports of disruption.

While the break may have caused an initial dip in water pressure to some area homes, the impact on residents was minimal. Public works crews quickly isolated the affected water main and shut off service. No resident home was without water and adequate pressure was maintained.

There is no public order to boil water.
