[ARCHIVED] Rt. 31 and Kimball Street Water Main Break

The Kimball Street bridge was closed and snarled rush hour traffic Wednesday night because of a major water main break at Rt. 31 and Kimball Street. The Metra line was closed north of the Chicago Street stop. Metra bused passengers from Chicago Street to Big Timber and from Big Timber to Chicago Street.

The water main break forced the Gail Borden Library to be closed Wednesday evening, however, the impact on area residents has been minimal.

Public works crews have isolated the problem and shut off service. Crews will be back on the scene Thursday morning to repair the break. Elgin’s Water Department rerouted the water mains to restore water pressure.

The Kimball Street Bridge will be closed through the night and people should anticipate traffic problems tomorrow morning. There is no anticipation of evacuating area residents and there is no public order to boil water at this time.
