[ARCHIVED] Rt. 31 and Kimball Street Water Main Break

Many residents are experiencing low to no water pressure this evening because of a major water main break at Rt. 31 and Kimball Street.

The Kimball Street bridge is closed and has snarled rush hour traffic. The Metra line has been closed north of the Chicago Street stop. Metra is busing passengers from Chicago Street to Big Timber and from Big Timber to Chicago Street.

The water main break has also forced the Gail Borden Library to be closed.

Public works crews will be working through the night to repair the break, however, there is no estimated time that the break will be fixed. Elgin’s Water Department is trying to reroute the water mains to restore water pressure.

The Kimball Street Bridge will be closed through the night and people should anticipate traffic problems tomorrow morning. There is no anticipation of evacuating area residents and there is no public order to boil water at this time.
