Elgin Police Department’s Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor the flooding situation in the City tonight barricading several flooded streets and intersections largely on the southeast side of town.
“While there are some street closures, Elgin is in pretty good shape,” said Brad Entler, Emergency Management Coordinator Liaison.
Streets and intersections barricaded are:
Gifford and Villa
South bound State and Wing
Ramona, Willard and Raymond
Ramona and North Villa
Willard and Lucille
Kirk and Getty
Jan Marie Lane
Brookside and Foothill
Varsity Lane from Woodview to Maroon
Hammond and Illinois
Additionally, Walton Island is closed.
“There have been no reports of homes flooding, although there was one report of an elderly woman experiencing some flooding in her basement,” said Deputy Chief Cecil Smith. “We’re prepared should any resident require assistance.”
Sandbags are available at the Elgin Public Works facility, 1900 Holmes Road. Should residents require additional sandbags, Kane County is also prepared to distribute sandbags at its public works facility, located at Route 72 and Sleepy Hollow Road.
An emergency shelter also is being established by the American Red Cross at Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin, however, residents needing a place to stay first should contact family or friends.
“It’s been our experience that people would prefer to stay with relatives in an emergency,” said Elgin Assistant Fire Chief Rudy Horist. “But if anyone needs a place to stay, the emergency shelter is an option.”
Horist emphasizes the fact that no one should attempt to drive through barricaded streets with standing water.
“People tend to under estimate the power of water,” said Horist. “Coupled with contaminates from homes and businesses along with utility hazards, flooded streets are extremely dangerous and should be avoided.”
