In response to local food pantries urgent need, the City of Elgin is hosting a food drive through December 19, 2008.
“The economy is certainly having an impact and more families are struggling,” said RuthAnne Hall, the City’s management analyst, coordinating the effort. “Food pantries are low and in some cases have been turning people away.”
Food pantries are seeking canned and dry goods but are in most need of: spaghetti noodles in one-pound bags, spaghetti marinara sauce, white rice in one-pound bags or boxes, pinto beans, macaroni and cheese, canned spaghetti or ravioli, chili, beef stew, tuna, ramen noodles, pork and beans, canned fruit, canned vegetables, crackers, peanut butter jelly, cereal/oatmeal, powdered milk, hand can openers.
