Elgin's Human Relations Commission is accepting nominations for its annual Humanitarian, Scholarship and Art & Essay Awards through Dec. 12.
The Commission presents the awards in January as part of its Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday Celebrations.
Humanitarian awards are given to individuals exhibiting excellence in civil rights advocacy, education, business and industry, housing, religion and community relations. Scholarship awards are presented to deserving high school seniors interested in continuing their education and the art & essay contest recognizes students K – 12th grade.
The 2009 King celebrations will begin on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 8:30 a.m. at ECC Fox Valley University Business Conference Center, 1700 Sparan Drive, Elgin and continues with the awards ceremony at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, on Sunday, Jan. 18, at 4 p.m.
Prayer breakfast tickets are $10 and are available at Elgin City Hall, 150 Dexter Court. The awards ceremony is FREE and open to the public. The 2009 them is Remember! Celebrate! Act! “Dare To Dream.”
