In a time of war, the Elgin Human Relations Commission and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Committee is asking residents to find inspiration in a man known for his teaching of peace.
Now through December 12, 2008 the Commission will accept nominations for it annual Humanitarian, Scholarship and Art & Essay Award.
The Commission presents the awards in January as part of the King Holiday Celebrations.
The awards, Humanitarian Awards are given in categories of housing, civil rights advocacy, education, business and industry, religion and community relations. Scholarship award to deserving High School Seniors continuing their education and the Art & Essay Contest for K – 12th grade - The awards are only one part of the program.
The 2009 King celebrations will be held at ECC Fox Valley University Business Conference Center, the annual prayer breakfast is Saturday, Jan. 17 at 8:30 AM and at the Hemmens Cultural Center on Sunday, Jan. 18, at 4:00 PM the FREE open to the public celebration. The 2009 theme: Remember! Celebrate! Act! “Dare To Dream.”
Prayer breakfast tickets ($10) are available at city hall, 150 Dexter Ct. Award forms are also available and on our website.
