[ARCHIVED] Grand Opening Channing Park

Celebrate the opening of one of Elgin’s newest parks, Channing Park with your neighbors on Friday July 25, 2008, from 5-8pm.

Neighbors in the Elgin Historic District and community residents are invited to a grand opening celebration. Improvements at Channing Park include a new playground, two tennis courts, half-court basketball and multi-play area, a 1/3 mile looped paved trail, additional landscaping and a small shelter. The park is located on DuPage Street, just east of Channing School.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. followed by a light dinner of hot dogs, chips and drinks served by the Channing PTO and Gifford Park Association representatives. Neighbors are encouraged to partake in a game of bags, Frisbee golf, or ladder toss. In addition, a free Quickstart Tennis demonstration and participation will take place between 6-7 p.m. No registration is necessary. Please bring along a tennis racquet for children, otherwise one will be provided based on availability at the event.

Quickstart Tennis is a new format to help kids ten and under learn and play the game. To make it easier for them, the United States Tennis Association has reduced the size of the court and racquets, lowered the net height, incorporated pressure-less balls and changed the scoring system. Now any child between ages five and ten can start playing tennis almost immediately-even if he or she has never pick up a racquet before. Just like other popular youth sports, Quickstart stresses the importance of play and team competition.
