The City of Elgin is holding its annual Spring Clean-Up this week of March 26th – 30th, 2007. Residents will be allowed to dispose of properly prepared trash, yard waste and bulk items free of charge during their regularly scheduled garbage pick-up day during this designated week. This service is only available to residential households with five or fewer units as well as condos/townhomes that receive service from Waste Management as part of the City’s Solid Waste Program.

“It’s a great way for residents to get a jump start on their spring cleaning,” said Tish Powell, Administrative Superintendent for the Elgin Public Works Department.

Residents are asked to observe the following guidelines in order to ensure collection:
Loose trash items must be containerized in plastic bags or cans no larger than 40 gallons in capacity and not exceeding 45 pounds in weight. Items such as wood and carpet should be tied into secure bundles/rolls up to 45 pounds and no larger than 2’ x 5’.

Yard Waste
Yard waste must be bagged in paper yard waste bags or tied into secure bundled up to 45 pounds and no larger than 2’ x 5’.

Bulk Items
Bulk items such as televisions, furniture, tires, etc… should be placed out whole/as is. Please remove motor oil and gasoline from items such as grills and lawnmowers before placing them out for collection.

A maximum of two (2) major appliances will be collected per household without a sticker. Major appliances include: refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, stoves, dishwashers and hot water heaters. For safety reasons, please remove doors from appliances prior to placing them out for collection.

Unacceptable Items
Hazardous materials such as paint, pesticides, automotive batteries, gasoline, used oil and other materials will not be collected. Contact the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Hotline at 1-800-HHW-PKUP to learn how to dispose of these items free of charge.

Residents should note that several different trucks (i.e., trash, recycle, bulk items, etc…) will be servicing their neighborhood throughout the day. Citizens are strongly advised to avoid on-street parking on their scheduled collection day.

Free Yard Waste Collection in April
Residents can continue to dispose of yard waste free of charge on their scheduled collection day during the entire month of April. Prepaid stickers will not be required on yard waste bags during this period. Simply follow the instructions above on preparing yard waste for pick-up. As always, bundled branches will be collected free of charge April – November.
