2020 Halloween Considerations

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released guidelines classifying trick-or-treating a high-risk activity during the coronavirus pandemic. The City of Elgin is not encouraging trick-or-treating this year consistent with the CDC’s guidance and is recommending alternative options for celebrating the holiday.

Those choosing to trick-or-treat should limit activity to 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 31. Households not participating are encouraged to leave the front door exterior lights turned off during those hours to discourage visitors. Trick-or-treating safety tips can be found at

Similar to activities like dining or attending events, persons choosing to participate in any Halloween celebrations should take appropriate COVID19 safety precautions, such as wearing a mask, social distancing and limiting group size.
