Elgin Expands Summer Drop-In Playground Program

Parks and Recreation Department’s Drop-In Playground Program Begins June 15

The City of Elgin’s Parks and Recreation Department announces that the annual Summer Drop-In Playground Program has been expanded this year, with more locations and programs held Monday-Friday, beginning June 15. The program runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with lunch served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This entire program is free and open to children ages 6-12.

Children are not required to attend daily or for the entire program time. Children are encouraged to “drop-in” when they need something new and exciting to fill their time. Even though playgrounds remain closed during phase 3 of the Restore Illinois Plan, children can still enjoy creating crafts and playing sports in nine Elgin parks, while social distancing.

Each location will only take 25 children at a time and children are required to wear masks. On days of rainy or inclement weather, the program will not be held. Contact the Elgin Parks and Recreation Information Line at 847-931-6140 to hear the daily status of this program. The City is grateful to the Northern Illinois Food Bank for providing the free lunches for participants each day.

Program locations for the 2020 summer season include:

  • Channing Park
  • College Green Park
  • Cornerstone Park
  • Grolich Park
  • Lords Park
  • Powder River Park
  • Settlers Park
  • St. Francis Park
  • Wing Park
