Elgin’s Public Works Department is ready launch the first construction phase of a five-year streetscape program in the City’s Central Business District (CBD) next week.
Installation of new water mains, hydrants and water service lines will begin Oct. 30, with work starting on South Grove Avenue at Chicago Street and moving south. Work on Grove Ave., between Highland Ave and Prairie Street, Fulton Street between Villa and Spring Streets, and Spring Street, between Chicago, Fulton and Grove Streets will be included.
“The nature of the utility construction will create many challenges,” said John Loete, Director of Public Works. “The construction will be planned and executed in order to maintain reasonable access during construction and minimize disruption to businesses where possible.”
The streetscape program is a part of a $17.6 million, multiple-year plan to improve the CBD. Several community meetings were held throughout the summer to gather input from those interested in the development of the City’s streetscape. A final meeting will be held in November.
