[ARCHIVED] Elgin Cooling Center Information

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning from Thursday, July 21st at noon until Friday, July 22nd at 7:00 p.m. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid 90’s with maximum heat index values of 105 – 115 degrees. Residents planning on being outdoors are encouraged to dress in light colored clothing and drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic fluids. The elderly, small children and pets are most susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Residents are also encouraged to check on relatives or neighbors that live alone if you believe that they have been exposed to the heat.

Experts also recommend limiting exposure to the sun and spending some time cooling off in air-conditioned places. If you do not have air conditioning, go to a public building or the City of Elgin Police Department lobby at 151 Douglas which is a designated cooling center. Residents needing to cool off are requested to check in with the information desk at the Police Department in order for staff to assist with any additional needs.
