This year, Elgin has 40 block parties registered to participate, each party will be recognized by a City dignitary, Elgin Police Department, Elgin Fire Department and a mascot being either Birdie, Grimace, Hamburglar, Ronald McDonald (McDonald’s mascots), McGruff the Crime Dog or Captain Clean Up.

The Elgin Police Department and the Elgin Target will co-host a kick-off event for National Night Out on Saturday, July 29th from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. in the Target parking lot at 300 S. Randall, which will include Target and Schwan’s Fine Food Fun Bus with free refreshments. The Elgin Police Department will conduct child fingerprinting, bike registration and safety course, DARE, McGruff and other safety tips. Also information will be available from Safe Kids Kane County with free gun locks and child safety seat inspections; Home Depot with security lighting information; LoJack with vehicle anti-theft information; Fox Valley Fire & Safety on home security systems; Elgin Community Crisis Center on women’s safety; GAT Guns on gun safety and the Elgin Fire Department.

National Night Out Poster Contest - Elgin Police Department wants Elgin’s kids to help “Give Crime a Going Away Party” by creating a poster about crime prevention. Each child can submit one poster for the contest. Children must be 12 years old or younger and live in Elgin. Entry forms can be picked up at the Elgin Police Department or found online at www.cityofelgin.org click on police/click on community relations/crime prevention and must be turned in by July 26.
