Construction began this morning on a $3.75 million project to widen Congdon Ave. between the Cook County line just west of Hiawatha and Maureen Drives.
Other improvements include the reconstruction of Congdon Ave. to provide a three lane cross section with dedicated left turn lanes at all intersections and curb and gutter improvements along the entire length of the street. Additionally a new storm sewer system will be installed.
Congdon Ave. will be closed to east bound traffic, which will be detoured from Congdon Ave. south to Dundee Ave./Liberty Street to Summit Street. Traffic will then move east on Summit Street to Illinois Route 59 and then north on Route 59 back to Congdon Ave.
The Cook Country Highway Department is constructing the project, however, the City of Elgin approved $505,000 this year for street lights along the improved part of the street that is within the City limits and for a bike path extension.
For more information contact the Cook Country Highway Department’s construction manager, John Biesell, at 312-603-1600. The City’s liaison for the project is Steve Pertzborn, senior engineer, at (847) 931-5964.
