May is Preservation Month! The Elgin Heritage Commission encourages residents and visitors during this month long opportunity to celebrate Elgin's rich heritage by visiting its historic places and attending events throughout the month of May. Call for Nominations: 2023 Mayor's Awards for Preservation.
The Elgin Heritage Commission is seeking nominations for the 2023 Mayor’s Awards for Preservation, the signature event of Preservation Month in May. These annual awards honor outstanding contributions to Elgin’s heritage and educate the general public of the value of our unique architecture, neighborhoods and history.
Nominations are due Friday, February 24, and nomination forms can be downloaded here.
Preservation Month Event Forms are due Friday, March 24 and can be downloaded here.
Hosted by the Elgin Heritage Commission and held annually in May since 1991, the Mayor’s Awards for Preservation is the keynote event during Preservation Month. Awards are given to persons, groups and organizations who lead a preservation project, save one or more historical properties, educate and promote an awareness of Elgin’s heritage, conduct creative historic projects relating to archival or object collections, or maintain a continuous cultural or historical organization for 50 years or more. Honorees have demonstrated their dedication to historic architecture, neighborhoods and the history of Elgin.
