Fire Codes

Overview

The Elgin Fire Prevention Bureau enforces two codes within the City of Elgin and areas that contract fire services from the city.

1. NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, 2012 Edition, as published by the National Fire Protection Association, which will be known as the Life Safety Code of the city, for establishing minimum requirements, with due regard to function, for the design, operation, and maintenance of buildings and structures for safety to life from fires, with the additions, insertions, deletions, and changes.
2. International Fire Code, 2012 Edition, as published by the International Code Council, be and is hereby adopted as and shall be known as the Fire Prevention Code of the city for establishing minimum regulations regulating and governing the safeguarding of life and property from fire and explosion hazards arising from the storage, handling, and use of hazardous substances, materials and devices, and from conditions hazardous to life or property in the occupancy of buildings and premises; and each and all of the regulations, provisions, penalties, conditions, with the additions, insertions, deletions, and changes.
