Overview
In 2002, the city started a yearly hydrant maintenance program that provides for the sandblasting and painting of 1000 fire hydrants a year. The council-adopted 2003 budget included continued funding of this project. All hydrants are painted an international orange.

Fire Hydrant Flushing Program
In addition to the hydrant maintenance program, the Elgin Water Department also maintains a hydrant flushing program to maximize water quality and keep Elgin's 500 plus miles of water main clean. The program also helps identify fire hydrants that may need to be repaired.
The flushing is conducted annually between April and June from 10:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. For more information, call or email Jeff Luker at (847) 931-6108.
