Mosquito Control Program

Overview

The Elgin Public Health Department administers the mosquito control program. Mosquito control in the Cook County portion of Elgin is provided by the Northwest Mosquito Abatement District (847-537-2306). Clarke Environmental Mosquito Control (800-942-2555) is contracted to provide similar control in the Kane County portion of the city.

Target

The emphasis of the program is to treat standing bodies of water or low laying lands that will hold water for a period of time that would be conducive for the breeding of mosquitoes.

Prevention Product

Placing products in water is called larviciding. This product will prevent the mosquito larvae from completing its life cycle. Emphasis is placed on larval control to the mosquito that transmits West Nile Virus by treating catch basins, and small standing bodies of water.
