May Cycling Events


Wednesday, May 10

Bike to School Day Ride or walk with your kids. Organize an event with your school prinicpal and/or parent teacher organization. For information and advice on organizing a bike to School Day event, go to: walkbiketoschool.org.

Thursday, May 11

Around the Gold Coast Ride Grab your bikes and get ready to admire some of northeast Elgin's mid-century architecture. We will see homes that are designed in the modern style of the era and more from the middle of the 20th Century. The tour is presented by the Northeast Neighborhood Association of Elgin (NENA) and is led by architectural historian and local author, Rebecca Hunter. Meet at 1007 Douglas Avenue at 7 pm for this hour and a half long neighborhood tour.

Sunday, May 14 

 Cyclofemme Ride Join BPAC on a Mother's Day bike ride on the Fox River Trail. Meet in the north parking lot at the Gail Borden Public Library at 4 pm. A special treat for the first 50 ladies to show up! Learn more about this international event at cyclofemme.com.

Wednesday, May 17

 Ride of Silence On one night in cities around the world, cyclists gather to ride in silence to raise awareness of cyclists' right to ride on the road and to honor the fallen cyclists no longer with us. The Ride of Silence serves as a rally that advocates for the living friends and family of victims, as well as a celebration of those who incorporate the bicycle into their lifestyle. We ride slowly and silently in hope to end the tragedy on our roads. BPAC invites you to join our friends in Bartlett for a Ride of Silence. We will meet at Spin Doctor Cyclewerks at 140 S. Hickory Street in Bartlett at 6:45 pm to ride 10 miles in silence.

Friday, May 19

 Bike to Work Week  BPAC invites you to join area commuters for a celebration of bicycling as a clean, fun and healthy way to get to work. Stop in at Arabica Cage, 59 Douglas Avenue, between 8 and 9 am for refreshments and to be entered into a raffle for prizes being given away.

Saturday, May 20

 Elgin Cycling Classic – A full day of bike racing through the neighborhoods next to beautiful Lord's Park. Details pending. for information go to psimetracing.com.

Sunday, May 28

 Bike the Drive NDon't miss the best car-free ride on Chicago's Lake Shore Drive. For more information and to register in advance, go to: bikethedrive.org.

Wednesday, May 17 

 Walk with the Mayor – Walk with Mayor Kaptain on May 17th. Mayor Kaptain understands the many benefits of walking and invites you to join him on his first outdoor Walk with the Mayor event for 2017. Starting at Garfield School, 420 May Street at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, May 18 

 Downtown Historic District Walking Tour Elgin historian Jerry Turnquist will lead a tour around the new Downtown Elgin Historic District featuring architectural gems and stories of how Elgin's downtown has changed and grown and changed again over the years. Meet in the public parking lot at the corner of South Grove and Riverside Drive at 7 pm.

Saturday, May 20 

 Hillside Guided Cemetery Walk – There is a small hidden cemetery that was used by the Elgin State Hospital for 50 years on Elgin's west side. Tour Hillside Cemetery with Elgin Mental Health Center historian Bill Briska. Meet in the Grumpy Goat Tavern parking lot on Sportsway Drive at 10 am.

Sunday, May 21 

 Near West Neighborhood Civil War Walk – Do you know all about Elgin's Civil War history? Learn all about Elgin connections as you take a uieded walk on Elgin's west side. The walk will start at the Nancy Kimball Cobblestone House, 302 West Chicago Street. $5 suggested donation. This walk is being hosted by the Near West Neighborhood Association. The walk is scheduled to last from Noon - 4 pm.

Saturday, May 27 

 Fox Trot Walk for a Cause 
The Elgin Valley Fox Trot is in its 40th year. This year, Fox Trot is proud to be supporting 27 of our local non-profits and community groups. When you register online for the 2-mile Walk for a Cause, we will donate your registration fee to the cause of your choice - just select the cause in the drop-down menu on the registration page. The 2-mile walk sets off from our start-finish line at the corner of Kimball and Douglas and follows a circular route through downtown and along the Fox River. The route is suitable for families. Strollers and well-controlled, leashed dogs are welcome to take part. The walk begins at 7:55 am.

Wednesday, May 31 

 Walk with the Mayor –

Saturday, June 3 

Blessing of Bicycles – Join BPAC and CERL for an interfaith blessing of the bicycles, honoring this form of transportation, exercise and fun. A ride to Van's Frozen Custard in Dundee will follow. Meet at 3 pm on the Fox River Promenade at South Riverside Dr in Elgin.
