Volunteer Orientation 
Volunteer Orientation

If you are interested in volunteering with Parks & Recreation, it is recommended that you attend Volunteer Orientation.

Volunteer Orientation will provide you with basic information about the City of Elgin, the Parks and Recreation Department and our volunteer program.

All sessions are from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at The Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way, Elgin.

 Hawthorne Hill Nature Center

Outdoor Habitat Work Days
Hawthorne Hill Nature Center uses one Saturday a month to clean up and beautify our nature center. Note: There will be no workday in Jan 2018.

The following lists the upcoming workdays:

 Saturday Feb 17, 2018 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
 Saturday Mar 17, 2018 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Do you love working outdoors and learning about nature? Are you looking for a one day project for you, your family, a club, team or students?

If you answered yes, put on your outdoor work clothes and get ready to have some fun, meet new people and serve the community.

Some of the tasks you may work on include:
  • Clearing weeds, brush and invasive plants
  • Gardening
  • Mulching and clearing trails from weeds and debris.

Requirements: 

  • Must be 16 or older
  • Youth ages 8 - 15 can volunteer if accompanied by a parent or guardian
  • All new volunteers must complete/sign a waiver and bring to the event. NOTE: If under 18, the waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian.

 On-going Hawthorne Hill Volunteer Opportunities

Greeter

  • Are you outgoing, friendly and have a pleasant phone voice?
  • Are you able to work a three hour shift once or twice a month?
  • Do you love nature and helping others but prefer to be indoors?

If you said yes, we have the perfect volunteer opportunity for you. Our nature center is looking for individuals to greet visitors, assist with events, answer the phone and perform general clerical duties.

We are asking for a commitment of once or twice a month for a three hour shift.

Requirements:

  • 18 or older
  • Must pass a background check and sign a waiver
  • Attend Orientation (currently unavailable)
  • Have basic clerical/office skills
  • Have a friendly, helpful attitude

Trail Monitors

Do you enjoy walking trails and love nature? If you do, we would love to have you as one of our Trail Monitors. Being a Trail Monitor means walking our trails and reporting any safety issues, such as overhanging branches or trees blocking the trails.

This position can be performed any time during open hours, all year round.

Requirements:

  • 16 or older
  • Children between the ages of 8 and 15 can volunteer if accompanied by an adult or guardian.
  • All new volunteers must sign a waiver.

The Centre of Elgin

 Front Lobby Greeter

The Centre of Elgin is looking for an outgoing, friendly individual to greet and direct our guests.
Centre 
When: Most Saturdays, in January, February and March 2018
Time: 9 am - 1pm
Where: The Centre front lobby, 100 Symphony Way, Elgin
What: In this volunteer position you will: greet and direct guests and answer general questions as needed.

This volunteer position does require a brief interview and training.

A front desk staff member will be available during the volunteer shift to help answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Note: We would prefer to have the same volunteer the entire season.

Requirements:
  • 18 or older
  • Must pass a background check and sign a waiver
  • Friendly, helpful and positive attitude
  • Must be able to stand most of shift

After School Program Assistants

Are you passionate about working with kids?
Are you thinking of a career in early childhood or elementary education?
If you answered yes, the Centre of Elgin has a great volunteer opportunity for you!

The Centre is looking for individuals to assist elementary age children with activities such as crafts, games and homework.
 After school Gym
When: Monday thru Friday during the school year

Time: 3 pm - 5 pm

Where: The Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way

Details: Assist children with arts and crafts, reading, homework, sports and games

  • 18 or older

When: Tuesdays during the school year

Time: 9:30 am - 1:30 pm
