Overview
The City of Elgin offers a variety of collection programs to help residents manage their leaves during the fall season. City crews collect loose leaves from the street in many older neighborhoods, while the remaining areas are required to bag their leaves for weekly pick-up by Waste Management. Residents will receive a brochure by mail in late September with more information about leaf collection services for their specific neighborhood.
Fall Leaf Collection Program Changes
Key changes have been made to this year's Fall Leaf Collection Program as part of our ongoing efforts to improve public works services and meet the needs of residents. Free bagged leaf collection run October 1st - December 4th to allow residents additional time beyond our loose leaf collection schedule to properly dispose of leaves. Crews will also be working after Thanksgiving Day on Friday, November 27th and Saturday, November 28th in order to maintain the published schedule.
General Guidelines
The following are some general guidelines for Fall Leaf Collection that apply to all residents:
- Prepaid refuse stickers are not required for yard waste bags placed out for collection October 1st - December 4th. Bags will be picked up by Waste Management on your regular weekly collection day.
- Leaves in plastic bags will not be collected.
- State law prohibits disposing of leaves and other yard waste in landfills. Therefore, these materials cannot be mixed with normal garbage for pick up.
- Leaf burning in Elgin is prohibited.
