Joseph was an employee of the Elgin Watch Factory. He and his wife, Hattie, purchased this tract of land on the north side of Fulton Street for $1,100 and had a house and barn built on it for $4,000. It is a mix of foursquare, gothic, and shingle styles, with numerous bays, curved walls, and a hipped roof. The delightful scalloping rails on the front porch add a queen anne flavor. Because of its shape and decoration, 412 Fulton has come to be known as the "wedding cake" house.
