Background
This is the Historic District's prize example of a cotswold cottage. Its steep slate roof and rusticated masonry detailing create ground-hugging proportions. A rare feature is the built-in front entry garage. The cotswold style is a variation on the tudor theme, and this particular design, brick with rough stone quoining was associated with "stockbroker's" houses, conveying wealth and class, and quite popular in the 1920's.

419 DuPage
Next door at 419 DuPage is a queen anne home, built c. 1890, with numerous carved friezes, stained glass, and a large barn/coach house. An early owner of this house was William Gabriel, chief designer at the Elgin Watch Factory for over forty years.
