This greek revival style building was built in 1856 and was the first Elgin building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Known as "Old Main," it was the main building of Elgin Academy, a private school open to students of all religious denominations.

Gifford Park Association played a part in the rehabilitation of this building after it suffered extensive fire damage and was left to decay. It is now home to the Elgin Area Historical Society.
