This is the original home of Edmund Gifford, an attorney who brought the first law library to Elgin in 1845. He was the city attorney and superintendent of city schools. He and his wife Lucy raised nine children in this second empire style home. The third floor was added in the late 1800s, along with the mansard roof and dormers.
