Excessive Weeds Over 8 Inches in Height
Procedures
  • When a tall weed/grass complaint is received, a Code Compliance Officer will conduct an inspection to verify the violation.
  • If the violation is valid, a violation notice will be posted on the property with a seven (7) day compliance date to have the area mowed below 8".
  • If the violation is not complied within the seven (7) days, the City of Elgin will issue a ticket and authorize the cutting of the area and will bill the owner for the cost of all cutting plus an administrative fee equal to the actual cost of the service. Per Section 9.16.040 of the Elgin Municipal Code this charge will not be less than $50 or more than $250. If not paid the City of Elgin will place a lien against the property for the amount owed.
  • Warning Notice: Since the growth of excessive grass and weeds is a health concern for many people, the City of Elgin will authorize the cutting of this property if not cut within 7 days. Upon follow-up, if the property is not in compliance, a $50 citation along with an order to cut the property will be issued.
  • Immediate Cut Notice: Our inspection has revealed that your grass/weeds are over 24" tall and therefore have been submitted for immediate cutting and a ticket will be mailed to the owner of record. The City will bill the property owner for the cost of this cutting plus an administrative fee equal to the actual cost of the service. Per Section 9.16.040 of the Elgin Municipal Code this charge will not be less than $50 or more than $250. The City will lien your property should the bill fail to be paid.
  • Repeat Offense Notice: Since the growth of excessive grass and weeds is a health concern for many people, the City of Elgin will authorize the cutting of this property if it is not cut within 7 days. Our records indicate that this property was cited for this violation within the last 12 months and therefore a $50 ticket has been issued. In addition the citation, the City will bill the property owner for the cost of all cutting plus an administrative fee equal to the actual cost of the service. Per Section 9.16.040 of the Elgin Municipal Code, this charge will not be less than $50 or more than $250. The City will lien your property should the bill fail to be paid.
