Domestic Animals

My dog/cat is missing, what should I do?

  • Losing a pet may be a very stressful situation.  Here are some suggestions to increase your chances of being united:
    • Immediately contact the police information desk at (847) 289-2500.
    • The police department transports recovered pets to the Golf Rose Animal Shelter, located in Schaumburg.
      • To see if your pet has been located, contact them at (847) 885-2122.
    • Contact your friends or neighbors to assist with the search.
    • Post flyers throughout your neighborhood..

There is a stray cat living around my residence/business, what can I do?

  • The department does not capture stray cats.  However, if the cat poses an immediate threat, such as the cat is ill or attacking someone, contact the non-emergency line at (847) 289-2700 and ask for an animal control dispatch. 

Should I approach an unfamiliar, loose dog?

  • Never approach an unfamiliar, loose dog.  The dog may appear friendly and curious, but it may bite a stranger who attempts to pet or capture it.  Instead, contact the non-emergency line at (847) 289-2700 and ask for an animal control dispatch.  If possible, until police arrival, contain the dog in a fenced in yard or garage. 

Wild Animals

Will the Elgin Police Department pick up a wild animal from my residence/business?

  • It depends on the disposition of the animal.  A non-aggressive animal is classified as a nuisance animal complaint.  You, as the homeowner, should contact a licensed animal trapper to come to your residence and remove the animal. Refer to the animal removal services listed in the yellow pages.
  • An aggressive animal may pose a threat to your safety.  Contact the non-emergency line at (847) 289-2700 and ask for an animal control dispatch.

  • Do not attempt to capture a bat.
