City Clerk’s Office
If you have an eye for detail, the city clerk’s office at the city needs your assistance for records management back file scanning. Volunteers are needed to prepare documents to be scanned; ensure quality of the scanned documents; correctly place the documents into electronic filing structure; file hard copies of completed documents. The volunteers may also answer phones as needed.
Location: City Hall, City Clerk’s Office - second floor south
Time: Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at your convenience
Requirements: Volunteers must have knowledge of Microsoft Office Products and office machines such as scanners and copiers. They should be detail oriented and committed to completing the project. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. Any volunteer under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Volunteers must pass a background check and will go through an orientation and training prior to beginning work.
Community Development Department
If you are interested in Elgin history or architecture, you will enjoy volunteering for an important project underway in our Community Development Department. The city’s goal is to create a data base of every property in Elgin, including the date of construction, architectural style, original owner etc. Volunteers are needed to input information from inventory/survey sheets of over 6000 buildings into a searchable data base that will become available for the public to search for historic information about properties throughout the city.
Location: City Hall, Community Development Department
Requirements: Volunteers need to have knowledge of Microsoft DB, be detail-oriented, be able to take initiative with little direction, and be committed to completing the project.

The Fiscal Services Department is looking for volunteers to process the daily water bill payments that are received by mail and the depository box outside of City Hall. This will include the preparation of a cash receipt batch with the appropriate supporting documentation, balancing the daily transactions and preparing a bank deposit. You would work independently and report directly to the Citizen Services Supervisor. You could choose one or more days a week working 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Time: Monday – Friday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Working knowledge of a computer and 10-key adding machine.
Volunteers must be 18 years old or older.
Orientation will be required prior to beginning your volunteer shift.
Volunteers must pass a background check.
