Volunteer for Special Events

Help us to make Elgin a fun and exciting place to live and visit by helping out at one of the City’s Special Events!  The City hosts 5 main events each year, plus several smaller events throughout the summer. No big time commitment is necessary.

Unpaid Summer Intern Opportunities

College Students studying arts, theater or specila events are encouraged to find out about upcoming unpaid summer internship positions with the City of Elgin Special Events, Art Showcase and Hemmens Cultural Center. For more information, contact Barb Keselica at 847-531-7056 or


Fox Trot

This event offers races for all levels of competition, including a 10 mile run, and the 2 mile Walk for a Cause. The race in endorsed by the Chicago Area Runners Association. Volunteers are needed the morning of the race to help with set up and registration, along the course as race monitors, and for the afterparty. Volunteers are also needed ahead of time for packet pickup and putting race packets together.

4th of July Parade


4th of July Parade

The City of Elgin and Downtown Neighborhood Association will partner once again to bring the annual 4th of July Parade to the Elgin community. Volunteers are a big part of making the 4th of July Parade go smoothly! Work to register entries, assist with parade line up, traffic control and many more duties. Art and Soul on the Fox

Art and Soul


After over 50 years in existence, Art and Soul continues to showcase Elgin as the center for the arts in the Fox Valley. Volunteers will enjoy working with artists, musicians and vendors, helping with set up and tear down, assisting with information and helping in a variety of other ways. In partnership with Art for All.

Elgin International Festival

Celebrate Elgin’s rich cultural heritage at Elgin International Festival, where you can take a trip around the world in one day! The event this year will take place along the new Riverside Drive Promenade.  Volunteers will be needed to serve on subcommittees, solicit sponsors, help with setup and tear down and many other duties. Meetings take place throughout the year.

Nightmare on Chicago Street

Halloween has never been more fun or more frightening than it will be this year in downtown Elgin. Join us on Saturday night, October 25, as we protect Elgin from being taken over by zombies and ghouls!  Hosted by the City of Elgin, Nightmare on Chicago Street promises to be a unique event that will transform Chicago Street into a movie set that will make you feel like you are actually part of the script. Volunteers are needed to help build, install and take down sets and decorations. Other volunteers are needed to help supervise downtown parking facilities, distribute promotional materials and clean up after the event. www.NightmareonChicagoStreet.com

Elgin Short Film Fest

You ought to be in the movies!! The Annual Elgin Short Film Festival features short films submitted by professional and semi professional film makers from around the country. Volunteers help set up the event, usher guests and assist in the voting process.

General Events Promotions

Are you looking for a more long-term volunteering opportunity?  Would you like to gain experience of event planning for a large organization?  Or maybe you would just like to know you are helping out behind the scenes?  If you have a few hours per week to spare and basic (or better) computer skills this could be the opportunity for you.

We are looking for a volunteer  to help us with event promotion.  This can involve getting our events listed on websites and social networking sites and delivering flyers and posters across Elgin.

Location: Volunteers could work from home or from City Hall (150 Dexter Court, Elgin).                              

Dates: Throughout the year on a casual basis

Cultural Arts Commission Projects

Looking for those interested in the Arts to help the Cultural Arts Commission and the Elgin Art Showcase with various projects throughout the year, including:

  • Staged readings projects
  • 1440 Photography Project
  •   Walkabout, Theater on Your Feet
  •   Kaleidescope of Music 
  •  Many other Arts related events
  •  Elgin Art Showcase shows

Times: Evenings and/or Weekends

Volunteers needed for:

Marketing and Promotion: Distribute flyers, promote via Social Media, write press releases etc.

Set Up and Strike of Set: To help create a theater atmosphere for the reading.

Ushers: Pass out programs and seat audience members

Concessions: Sell refreshments during intermission

Requirements: Some duties require volunteers be 21 or older
