Each year, the City of Elgin Human Relations Commission takes great pride in presenting a weekend of activities celebrating the life of one of our country’s greatest civil rights leaders, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 

Schedule of Events

Saturday, January 14  |  
Annual Prayer Breakfast at ECC  |  8:30-10:30 a.m. SOLD OUT - NO MORE TICKETS AVAILABLE

Sunday, January 15  |  Public Program at the Hemmens  |  4:00 p.m.  Free to the public.  College Scholarship and Art Contest Award winners will be announced.

Monday, January 16  |  
Youth Day of Service at the Centre of Elgin  |  8:30 a.m. registration

Monday, January 16  |  
Community Food Drive  |  Donations can be made at all Elgin fire stations, Jewels, City Hall and most churches

Humanitarian Award

The MLK Celebration Committee recognizes individuals who are residents of Elgin, and organizations serving residents of Elgin, whose work reflects the teachings and life work of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther, Jr.  Awards will be given in 3 categories:  Individual Adult, Individual Youth and Organization.

Youth Day of Service 
The Youth Day of Service is geared toward young people in middle and high school. Participants learn about community issues and how they can help address them.
