Martin Luther King Jr.

Each year the Elgin Human Relations Commission and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Committee take great pride in presenting a weekend of activities celebrating the life of one of our country’s greatest civil rights leaders, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This year, the celebration will begin on Saturday, January 16th at 8:00 a.m. with a Prayer Breakfast at Elgin Community College Business Conference Center.  Keynote speaker Pastor Dexter K. Ball, founder of Faithwalk Harvest Center in Carpentersville and Mayor Ed Schock will speak and recognize Humanitarian Award winners from throughout the community.  Prayer breakfast tickets are $15 and available to purchase at City Hall, 150 Dexter Ct.

The celebration then continues on Sunday, January 17th at 4:00 p.m. at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin.  As a special honor for the 25th anniversary of the event, the guest speaker will be Congressman Bill Foster, representative for Illinois’ 14th Congressional District. Various entertainment groups from Elgin and other communities will honor Dr. King through song and dance with the program also including art and essay awards and scholarship presentations.  The Dr. King celebration at the Hemmens is free.

Please join us this year in special celebration of the 25th anniversary of this annual event.
