    The EMHC cemetery is more than a burial ground. It is an artifact of a by-gone era's social safety net and healthcare policy. Tour this little location with Elgin Mental Health Center historian Bill Briska.

  2. Roaring 20’s Excursion!

    It's the Bee's Knees & the Cat's pj's. The 3 hour Great Gatsby afternoon excursion includes a caravan departure from the veranda of an 1898 landmark, escorted by classic model T or vintage cars, photo ops near once-upon-a-time speakeasies, historical and architectural overviews , a chance to "Charleston" on the floor of the classiest "Club" outside Chicago, Sweet Tea, pie & more pie!   3. Memorial Day at Bluff City Cemetery

    May 25, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM @ Bluff City Cemetery

    An Elgin tradition since 1868, this year’s program will pay tribute to those women who served as nurses in the military. Included will be an address by Lorraine Darr, former United States Air Force nurse in Vietnam, Elgin Master Chorale and the Larkin High School Band. Co-Sponsored by the Elgin Patriotic Memorial Association and the City of Elgin.

  4. Planetarium Public Shows

    May 26, 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Elgin National Watch Company Observatory

    Two 1-hour presentations will include a sky show plus an in-depth history of the Observatory and the Elgin National Watch Company. Self-guided tours will be available before and after both shows. Visitors will be able to tour the building either before or after the presentation.

  5. The History of the Elgin National Watch Company

    Jerry Turnquist of the Elgin Historical Society will use numerous photos to illustrate the story of the Elgin National Watch Company that was founded during the Civil War and went on to produce over 60 million “Elgin” watches before closing in the 1960s.

  6. Newsome Park Interpretive Sign Dedication

    May 29, 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM @ Meet at Newsome Park, corner of Dundee Ave. and Kimball Street

    Mayor David Kaptain will dedicate six new historical interpretive signs in Elgin's Newsome Park. Newsome Park was the site of the first African American church, “Second Baptist Church” 1876 - 1961. The Summit-Hill Neighborhood in partnership with the Elgin History Museum and generous sponsors researched and designed signage showcasing Elgin's African American leadership.

  7. 10th Annual Fireside Chat about Elgin’s Past

    Come share your memories or just to listen during an informal discussion about various aspects of Elgin’s past led by Elgin historians E.C. “Mike” Alft and Jerry Turnquist. Attendees are encouraged to bring memorabilia to share with the audience. Sponsored by the Gail Borden Library.

    Conducted by the Elgin Navy Club, the program will feature the Elgin Master Chorale and honor veterans interred at sea. The keynote speaker will be Lieutenant Adrienne Townsend - staff chaplain from the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Service ends with the strewing of flowers into the Fox River, rifle salute, and the playing of Taps.
