Citizens Police Academy

The purpose of the Citizens Police Academy (CPA) is to provide citizens with an enhanced understanding of the Elgin Police Department through education. Our next CPA is scheduled for Spring 2019. Please check back in January for details.

About the Program

The program provides an informative overview of the fundamentals of police operations and the various specialty units within the department for anyone 18 years of age and older. The format includes lecture-style presentations by EPD officers and staff, as well as some hands-on experiences. CPA is free. If you are interested in learning more about the Elgin police department, CPA is a great way to get started.  Over eight weeks, you will meet our chief, receive a facility tour, hear from patrol officers, meet several detectives and other specialty division officers, talk to a dispatcher, see a mock crime scene and experience one of our K9 officers in action. You will learn about gangs and drugs, check out SWAT equipment, shoot on our range and much more.

Spanish Citizens Police Academy - Registration Open

For our Spanish-speaking residents, the department provides the Citizens Police Academy training in Spanish. Registration is currently open,  click here  for an application; click here for a brochure. Training will be held Wednesday - Friday 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. - noon September 19-22, 2018.

Senior Citizens Police Academy

For senior citizens who would like to learn more about the police department, the senior citizens police academy provides seniors who are at least 55 years of age with the opportunity to learn about the department’s Tactical Response Team, K-9 Unit, Drug and Gang Units, and much more.  The academy is free.  Elgin residents are first priority for acceptance; a criminal background check will be conducted for each applicant.
