The City of Elgin offers a variety of collection programs to help residents manage their leaves during the fall season. City crews collect loose leaves from the street in many older neighborhoods, while the remaining areas are required to bag their leaves for weekly pickup by Waste Management.

General Guidelines

The following are some general guidelines for Fall Leaf Collection that applies to all residents:

  • Prepaid garbage stickers are not required for yard waste bags placed out for collection October 1 – November 30. Bags will be picked up by Waste Management on your regular weekly collection day. For the 2020 program year, there is NO yard waste collected December 5-March 31. Any bags collected December 1-4 require garbage stickers.
  • Leaves in plastic bags will not be collected.
  • State law prohibits disposing of leaves and other yard waste in landfills. Therefore, these materials cannot be mixed with normal garbage for pick up.
  • Yard waste must be placed in biodegradable paper bags (maximum 33 gallons and 45 pounds) for collection. Yard waste placed in plastic bags will not be collected.
